TRAVEL ITALY: WHEN THE MESSAGE OF HOPE ARRIVES IN A WHEELCHAIR
LUCA AND DANILO HAVE TOURED THE ENTIRE BOOT WITH THEIR WHEELCHAIRS. FROM RAFTING TO WATER SKIING, FROM NORTH TO SOUTH, ALWAYS WITH A SMILE TO SHOW THAT NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
A month of time, thirty stages, a journey all along the boot with a desire in mind that has the flavor of mission: to prove that nothing is impossible. That of Luca and Danilo is a story of hope, a victory built day by day, from the moment they decided not to be overcome by difficulties, even if this means spending their lives on a wheelchair. But Luca and Danilo wanted to do more: they turned their victory into a testimony to be shared with all of Italy. A journey across our country to accept the challenges of extreme sports, an adventure in which we at Acqua S. Bernardo believed and that we wanted to live alongside them, kilometer after kilometer.
What to do when in a little more than twenty years, in the middle of youth, a traffic accident forces you into a wheelchair? Danilo Ragona and Luca Paiardi met in that delicate phase of their life, in ’99, in Turin in a Spinal Unit. To unite them and unite them the desire to answer this question with a new beginning, without allowing the despair to write the final word on their lives. Today Danilo is 38 years old and is a designer animated by a love for sport and adventure. Luca, aged 36, is an architect, musician and loves spending his free time on the tennis courts. Both the challenge they had won 17 years ago won: they never gave up and they never lost their passions. The challenge that saw them protagonists this summer with Viaggio Italia was, instead, to tell their story to make it clear that if they did it, everyone can do the same.
From 6 June to 6 July 2016 Danilo and Luca traveled throughout Italy. Milan, Rome, Naples, Venice, Cagliari, Palermo are just some of the thirty cities visited . In each of these they managed to show how the will is the first step to make the impossible possible. They ventured into extreme sports: they flew in paragliding, sailed by boat and sail and kayak, rafting, snorkeling, water skiing and much more. But above all they have talked with people to spread a correct culture of disabilitybecause disability does not rhyme with renunciation, especially today, at a time when there are so many possibilities to break down barriers and develop technologies and products reserved for this category that counts more than 900 million people. Viaggio Italia has also made a stop in the Spinal Units of the hospitals, because that’s where this testimony is most needed. Because it is there that Luca and Danilo have decided to come back to live again, this is the place where other people can accept the challenge of not giving up and continuing to live with autonomy, independence and a smile.
Living this adventure with Danilo and Luca , accompanying them on their journey, for us at Acqua S. Bernardo was not an experience like the others. It was a continuous discovery, a surprise, every day, of how the courage and the desire to live are able to break down every kind of barrier , especially those raised by prejudice . We laughed with them, shared moments of joy and discouragement, experienced challenges and saw opportunities created where many see only difficulties. Living with them the journey of Italia Travel means being witnesses to a message of hope, of a love for life that we should all learn to rediscover.
